Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) occurs after someone goes through a traumatic event like assault, torture, refugees. Diagnosis of PTSD requires a combination of symptoms from specific symptom clusters; these symptoms may include flashbacks, nightmares and severe anxiety, as well as uncontrollable thoughts about the event. These symptoms must be present more than one month and must cause significant distress or impairment. The symptoms should be unrelated to medical condition or effect of a substance.
